Kampala Minister Minsa Kabanda, State House Local Content Unit meeting with Chery Holdings Group

KCCA woos Chinese giant for Solid waste management

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is in talks with Chinese conglomerate Chery Holdings
Group, for the development of its solid waste management to modern standards.

Kampala Minister Minsa Kabanda met Chery Group’s Vice President, 15th April 2025 at her
office in Kampala for a business workshop on how to tackle the menacing issue of solid
waste around the city.

Kampala produces 1500 tonnes of waste everyday, and 80% of this waste is biodegradable,
according to KCCA figures.

Careless dumping and other human practices have made Kampala flood prone as garbage
blocks drainage channels in times of rain.

It has also resulted into various public health challenges

Since the August 2024 catastrophe at Kiteezi, KCCA has been on its toes, searching for
solutions to Kampala’s waste disposal and management.

Even though Chery Group presented various innovations ranging from solar technology and
cable cars, the minister emphasised the case for solid waste management.

“As an Authority, our immediate need is solid waste management. Handling this issue will go
a long way in solving our challenges.”

If this succeeds, the Chery Group conglomerate will be an addition to the Ghanaian firm
Jospong Group that entered the market October 2024.

Two months after the Kiteezi tragedy that killed tens and displaced hundreds, the
government through the ministry of Kampala Affairs contracted Jospong Group of
companies from Ghana, which promised to level the Kiteezi landfill with part of the area
repurposed for recreational activities
